What clearance means in railway infrastructure

In railway engineering, clearance refers to the space available around the track within which a train can safely pass without interference with nearby structures or objects.

Clearance verification ensures that trains can safely pass through constrained structures such as tunnels and bridges, while also detecting elements that may reduce the available operational space. These may include infrastructure components, temporary installations or vegetation growing close to the track.

For this reason, clearance inspection plays a key role in modern railway infrastructure monitoring and diagnostics.

The ADTS clearance measurement system

ADTS performs clearance inspection using laser-based profiling technology designed for railway diagnostic applications.

During an inspection run, the laser sensor continuously captures cross-sectional profiles of the railway surrounding environment.

An integrated Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) records the motion and orientation of the inspection vehicle, ensuring consistent spatial alignment of the measurements along the entire route. 

Clearance analysis software

Once the acquisition phase is completed, the collected data are processed within the ADTS clearance analysis software.

The software visualizes the measured environment as a point cloud representation of the railway infrastructure, allowing engineers to analyse the available space around the track.

A key functionality of the system is the ability to compare the measured space with specific vehicle profiles to verify whether the available space is compatible.

Detection of interference areas

When the reconstructed geometry conflicts with the selected clearance profile, the system automatically identifies interference areas.

These are highlighted within the analysis environment through multiple visual indicators:

  • graphical visualization within the cross-section profile
  • highlighted intersection areas
  • markers along the inspected route indicating the position of the interference.

This multi-level visualization allows engineers to quickly identify both the location and the geometric nature of potential clearance conflicts.

Inspection results and reporting

Following the analysis phase, the system can generate detailed clearance inspection reports.

The reports provide information such as:

  • the kilometre position of interference points
  • the length of affected sections
  • graphical representations of highlighted profiles

These reports support infrastructure managers in planning maintenance activities, infrastructure adjustments or compatibility assessments for rolling stock.

Integration with video inspection

To support the interpretation of detected anomalies, the clearance measurement system can be synchronized with video inspection cameras.

This allows profile measurements to be correlated with visual documentation of the trackside environment, making it easier to understand the nature of the elements responsible for clearance restrictions.
